I only dress in black and white: how to introduce new colors?

Today I want to share with you a topic that many women experience: many of my clients confess to me, in fact, that they always and only dress in white, black, gray and generally neutral colors.

It almost seems as if there is an underlying fear of daring to wear other colours , for fear of being too much at the centre of attention: somehow, dressing in more neutral and dull colours makes us feel safe , and protected in our comfort zone.

Often, however, the same people confess to me that they are tired of living in such a monochromatic way, and that they would like to open up to a few more colors: it is completely normal, because colors make us feel good and transmit energy and good humor .

Let’s see together some advice for those who dress in a monochromatic way , and want to open up to new colors in the wardrobe:

  • Think about what colors you like : what are the shades you have chosen for your home, or office? what colors attract you most in general? starting from the colors that inspire you immediately can be a great choice. If, for example, you love green you can start experimenting with this color in your closet using it as an accessory : a patterned scarf with green inside, a piece of jewelry, or a T-shirt in this color. The same thing for any other color you like.

  • Now try to put on any fabric item of the color you would like to experiment with: the second step is to see yourself in the mirror with a new color under your face, try it with any fabric item you have at home, even towels, tablecloths, pillow covers & co. Do you see yourself bright with that shade, or dull? Many times the reason that pushes us to discard colors is precisely the fact that they hit us in the face, and obviously the secret lies in the power of color harmony . You can certainly include some new colors in your wardrobe, starting from the ones you like, even worn close to your face!

  • At this point, try color combinations: all you have to do is try the new color you want to introduce into your wardrobe, seeing how it goes with the clothes you already have in classic white, black, gray and other neutral colors. Do some combination tests , and try to understand which neutral colors this new shade seems to go best with. Going back to the example of green, it will certainly go well with white, black but probably also with gray and maybe even with beige.

  • Buy, or borrow, an accessory or item of clothing in the new colors you have chosen, and wear it for a whole day : the definitive test of the new colors should be done by wearing the chosen shade for a whole day . If you have someone who can lend you an item of clothing in the new shade that you would like to introduce into your wardrobe, you can do this, or you can buy an accessory or item that costs little. This way you won’t regret spending too much on something you’re not sure you’ll wear yet: let’s keep the guilt at bay, and try to get ourselves positive emotions

  • Now ask yourself how experimenting with new colors makes you feel : this is the most introspective part of experimentation, and that is, ask yourself how it made you feel to show off a different color scheme . Were you uncomfortable, or did you feel good? Did you feel energetic, vital, or was there something out of place? Whatever your answer, give yourself time : if you have been wearing monochromatic clothes for years, or even decades, it will take time to get used to seeing yourself dressed in different colors.

  • Last step if the previous steps went well: introduce another color. At this point it is likely that you feel brave and want to experiment in this way with other colors: welcome! Getting out of your comfort zone always gives a sense of self-confidence, even if at the beginning it can also be a bit tiring. Think of how satisfying it is to see yourself in the mirror more colorful and smiling, and to feel more comfortable with your clothes…
