Oversized shirt: how to wear it and create different looks

The oversized shirt is an interesting piece in that it is very transformable.
It will not suit everyone but for those who like shirts, it can give great ideas for reuse.
The advantage also is that you can easily find this garment second-hand , especially in the men’s section or in your sweetheart’s wardrobe.
I advise you to pay attention to its quality, to favor a beautiful cotton or linen. I advise you to avoid at all costs a shirt made of synthetic or traditional viscose. It can be plain, printed (stripes, checks, etc.) or even embroidered, depending on the style you are looking for. And as its name suggests, its cut is loose, giving the impression of a size that is too big, but the final fall will not be that disconcerting. The seam is not adjusted at the shoulder, the panels are quite long, and the back is often even longer.
Below, I share ideas for easy looks to make the most of the oversized shirt. In principle, it will be worn with long sleeves rather than short sleeves to keep an overall balance in terms of volumes. But you can see in photos that it also works well with three-quarter sleeves.

The oversized shirt worn loosely

For a guaranteed effortless chic look, leave it closed, and fall casually over pants, fitted or slim jeans. This casual look can be worn with sneakers of course, but don’t forget pumps or other heels, for a more unexpected (and therefore more assertive) look.
Another cool version is to roll up the sleeves and wear it at the back of the body, letting its weight fall at the back of the neck (we love the striped shirt this way!). This allows you to clearly show off your head and give the oversized shirt a completely different look, no less feminine. Inside or outside the bottom, it doesn’t matter, just choose the option that makes you most comfortable.
And in winter, it won’t be excluded from your wardrobe! It will be perfect with a turtleneck sweater slipped underneath.

Asymmetrical bottom tuck

With this kind of large blouse, we will have the possibility of creating looks that move away from the uniform effect of catering or secretarial work! Personally, this is a bit what blocks me in the classic format women’s shirt.
In this case, the asymmetry games are perfect for making the look a little more original. And this way of playing with the excess material is only possible because the piece is voluminous!
Thus, we can tuck in the front of the shirt (by making it a little bloused or with a knot in summer) and leave the back free, fluid and floating in the wind 😉
Another possibility is to tuck in only one side of the shirt at the bottom.

The oversized shirt in a dress version

♥ The beach shirt dress
Quite simply, the XXL shirt can be worn as a beach dress, open or more or less closed, over the swimsuit.
♥ The city shirt dress in different ways
If the oversized shirt is long enough, it can be enough on its own. You can belt it or not according to your taste, your mood or according to the more or less feminine or boyish style that you want to give it.
For a more fashionable silhouette, you can opt for:

  • a sleeveless jacket over it
  • a sweater or short sweatshirt
  • a sleeveless V-neck knitted sweater with boots, ankle boots or chunky boots…

Playing with layering:

There are plenty of ways to create depth in your look using an oversized shirt as a base. Here are some very stylish ideas:

  • we make it stick out from a winter sweater, over a long skirt or pants
  • we leave it open, under a short sweater, revealing shorts or cycling shorts.

The shirt accessorized with a banana:

For a chic and street look, the fanny pack can be the ideal accessory with the oversized shirt worn as a tunic.
The fanny pack can act as a belt and cinch the loose shirt (note the little asymmetrical play once again by buttoning “Tuesday with Friday”).
Another option is to wear the fanny pack as a crossbody, in a more sporty way. I love the overall result with fishnet tights, boots and a headband.

The oversized shirt to give a new look to your skirts!

♥ You can transform the style of your short skirts by adding the oversized shirt on top. This works particularly well with short flowing, skater, or ruffled skirts.
♥ To twist/shift a long pleated skirt. Let it fall on top in a very boyish way to completely shift the styles and give the pleated skirt a whole other kind!

It is used as an overshirt or mid-season jacket.

Finally, the oversized shirt can be worn as a small, lightweight overcoat. Thus, it can act as a mid-season jacket with shorts and a t-shirt. The crop top, combined with a high waist, is interesting to fully play the feminine/masculine contrast (like with a checked shirt for example). Otherwise, we safely bet on denim shorts and a small silk camisole for a more discreet femininity.
We don’t think about it often enough but this shirt is really multi-functional!
